I’m writing this from the balcony of our vacation ‘cabin’ looking out over a lake as the sun is fighting to wake up and appear. This is the last day of seven days away as a family (my wife and I and our four children). It has been good for my soul to devote some annual time to get away and re-create. We’ve all had a full measure of fun. But yesterday morning I woke to read this scripture that messed me up….even God enjoyed our vacation…
“Let the LORD be magnified, Who has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.” And so my tongue cannot help but speak of His righteousness and His praise all the day long (Psalm 35:27, 28).
This all came about following a connection I made earlier this year as I was presenting a dreaming with God session at a smallish rural church in heartland America. During the session everyone starts writing out their dreams and at the end I get them to turn to a neighbor and share a dream then ask what they could do to move towards the dream becoming reality. At that time a local person I had connected with came up to me and asked me one of my dreams. I shared a spiritual/ministry dream first because that was what I’d been focussing a lot on at the time. He ignored that and asked me “What’s a personal dream?” I was a bit taken back and had to think a bit harder. “Well, I want to take the family on a vacation….maybe visit the zoo in Sacramento for an extended weekend.” This was manageable for our finances and within the ‘probable’ category of happening.
He continued to ignore what I said and asked if my family enjoyed water and boats… and would we be interested in coming out to heartland America for a week in his family cabin by a lake? I was surprised but said it sounded great but would need to talk it over with my wife (and get a bit more details). I was thinking a small, manageable dream that was totally within my resources. God had something bigger and better because He delights in the prosperity of His servants!
My ‘three day zoo vacation’ turned into a week away including flights, rental vehicle and accommodation in two different family homes – one by a river and one by a lake. We got to go quad biking, fishing, canoeing, paddleboating, jetskiing, tubing (called ‘biscuiting‘ in New Zealand), fishing, swimming… and plenty of eating! In one of the homes there was even a media and games room where the kids watched a movie and played pinball and pool!
As the Dad I took great pleasure in seeing my kids have fun. Holly loved tubing. Ben got hooked on fishing and caught his first catfish. Emily got to hangout with her new Grandma who is a professional artist, and paint alongside her! Hannah loved the tubing, jetskiing and waterskiing.
And the bonuses were getting to pray, prophesy and baptise one of our new friends in their pond, praying for their grandfather and seeing his rotator cuff healed, praying for another new friend who was healed from a urinary problem they had for over nine years, and most of all making lasting connections that will extend through eternity.
Your loving Father truly does take delight in your prosperity (way more than finances!).
Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2)
